Community band performs at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor

The Community Band, an organization founded by Buckskin Joe Hoyt in the spring of 1871, held a special performance for the residents and staff of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor last month.

Made up of about 50 members who are high school age and above, the band holds special significance in the state of Kansas.

“The band has had several names and various organizational models over the years, but it has been in continuous existence for 151 years—the longest in the state,” said Band Director Chris Vangilder.

In addition to its performance at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor, the Community Band performs at several other local venues including Wilson Park in an attempt to entertain audiences and keep the history of the group alive.

“Our goals are to provide free entertainment for the community and preserve the historical significance of this type of music and performances,” said Vangilder.
